Description: Since 1991, the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship program has provided opportunities for graduate students in the fields of health and social service to develop community-based projects in the United States or at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in West Central Africa. In this component of the GoodWork® study, interviews were conducted with current Schweitzer fellows who were in the last stages of graduate training and former fellows who were early in their careers in the fields of medicine, public health, social work, and occupational therapy. This paper explores fellows‘ goals, the challenges and pressures they faced, and the beliefs and values that led them to become involved in community service work.
